Hi I lived in port hedland for 12 months . I was pregnant while over there and got to know the hospital very very well. They are building a new hospital in south hedland now , I think its due to open in nov ?

Im not sure what the schools are like , but they have 3 primary schools in south hedland and one I think in port hedland .

As for the town , well its a a mining town . Red dirt with the twinkle of broken glass . Its a pretty rough place , My DH managed the Bp servo in south and every morning when he turned up something would be smashed. There are some really lovely people there, but there are also some really bad people . There are a lot of indiginous australians that frequent the parks to drink , hence the twinkle of broken glass in the red dirt.

It is very hot and very very humid . We had 5 aircons in our house , one in each bedroom and one in the family room/kitchen. We were lucky not to have to pay power (company paid , power , water and rent). House are very expensive to buy or rent , our rent was $1100 a week and it was a duplex with no backyard. Its too hot to let kids play outside after 10am and before 6pm .I forgot to mention cyclones season between november and april , we didnt get any but had a couple of close calls , scary stuff !

We only stayed long enough to save for a house deposit then we couldnt wait to leave. In my opinion its not a kid friendly place to live .

google port hedland , there was a 4 corners report doneon it 2 years ago . We watched it and read the transcript befor we went. I was a massive shock for us , moving from victoria to there .

PM me if you want to ask me anything else smile
Thanks heaps! DH flew over the other week will have a job with BHP so they are paying for accomodation and bills. Yeah he said the hospital is 110% better than the old one due to open soon. It will be a big change from here and QLD but the money is too good to pass up and it wont be forever.

Hello taiha & Williams mum! I've lived in port hedland since I was 3, I think you get your bad people everywhere but just avoid them like you would anywhere. Obviously no matter where you live you need to lock your doors day & night. There are no gangs here like in the city so thats a plus smile There is not a great deal here to do but being a local resident for 24 years I have seen the town change for the better and it is getting a lot nicer so please don't be too worried about moving here! Its great for saving up lots of money and going on lots of holidays! Make the most of your time here. I had my daughter in the port hedland hospital late 2008 and can't wait to have my next baby in the new hospital April next year. There are a lot of very friendly people here, the mothers groups and kids function up here are really good. That's great your hubby has a job with bhp, they are a very family orientated company. My husband is a supervisor for a mining company called conneq (formally bilfinger Berger) if you can get into the mining industry it makes all the difference living here. There are ALOT of new mums and young children here, so your kids will make friends quickly. As for cyclone season it gets scary when you get up to a category 4, anything lower than that is very windy and wet smile I love cyclone season, you probably find a lot of us weirdo locals do ha ha. Cyclone George happened during the night, my husband is from the city and stayed up listening to the radio I was fast asleep in bed (even when a small tree branch landed on my bedroom roof ha ha - every house up here is built to cyclonic standard.) when cyclone season comes around go into the local council and get yourself a cyclone awareness kit. I used to work there, they should be very helpful with any of your concerns. As for the 4 corners report there was a lot of stuff that was said about the town that was totally untrue. It was one of those reports where it's just one sided. They didn't ask any of the locals how good the town has been to them. They are just starting to put a bit of money back into the town which is good. It's amazing how many billion is made here and we might be lucky to get another skate park ha ha. Well, hedland has been good to me and I hope you enjoy your time here. I think I only have another 24 months here until we move down south. My husband and I have got everything we wanted from living here and we will eventually move and live comfortably. Not bad for a 27 yo ha ha. Hope you move here soon and like it as much as I do! A lot of us mums gather at the local watering hole (mc cafe smile Might see you there one day xx
I know a girl that is up there now. They have been there for 2 yrs and are having a ball. They have made some great friends so that really helps. I used to live in a mining town (Roxby Downs) when I was a teenager and found that as people are always coming and going everyone was very accepting of new people.

Hi Mz_Liberty! Thanks for all the wonderful info! The big move is happening in the next fortnight. We are flying out of QLD round the 28th and gear is going next week. Its scary and exciting, but i am looking forard to settling in up there.
