We currently live in brisbane but my partner working in mines in wa, so we going to make the move to perth in april next year. I have a 4 year old daughter starting prep in jan and one of the way due 14th jan. I have never been to wa and would like advice from other mums on what suburbs are great to live in with kids, safe and not too expensive. Also names of good primary schools as will need to enrol my daughter as soon as we decide where to live. I would love to live near the beaches. Any advice would be helpful smile

hi,
there are lots of fifo mine workers living here with their families. i'm from perth myself but have done fifo for many years and have just finished working and am now a brand new mum. from my experiences with fifo, the most popular places for workers to settle are scarborough (on the beach, about 12km to city) and mandurah (cheaper but much further from perth like an hour south). all the northern beaches suburbs are nice and anything further north of scarbs will have places for all budgets. except probably trigg, north beach, hillarys, sorrento, iluka - very expensive. one suburb in from the beach is probably better value - suburbs like hammersley, kingsley, greenwood, padbury, edgewater, craigie, beldon. there are some scungy pockets but also some decent family homes and the train line is close. another good thing about the northern suburbs is sometimes fifo workers find their taxi's dont turn up the closer to the airport you live. if you are further out, you are almost always guaranteed that the taxi will show up because they know they will get a decent fare!
hope that helps. good luck!

If you dont want to live by the coast- the swan valley is just gorgeous. Ellenbrook is very popular at the moment- growing with new shops opening everywhere. there are nice suburbs surrounding it too- depending on your price range. like the vines, henley brook. Its only about 25mins drive to the airport but you live right in the middle of the gorgeous wineries etc. My step dad does FIFO and lives in the hills near aplace called Mundaring. It just gorgeous- a little rural and takes him about 35mins to get to airport.
there is a big north/south of the river debate in perth. so depending on what side appeals to you. im from the north and dont know alot about the southern river suburbs. Although at the moment Im living in a rural town an hour from perth but i love it.
good luck!

My suggestion is to move to a town close to where your hubby is doing FIFO. The country life in WA is awesome!
