Students Midwives Rss

Has anyone had a student midwife with them through your pregnancy and your appoinments and at the birth of your baby.
I just wanted to know if you did what was the experience like.
When i was first told about this i was a little apprehensive and found it a little intrusive but i went and had my first antenatal appointment with one of the students there and she was great really knew what she was talking about so i said yes to doing it.
I just wanted to talk to someone that has experienced this before because i would rather not regret it afterwards.
I am in New Zealand, but yes I had one. She was lovely! She was very professional but willing to talk to the senior midwife if she was unsure of anything. She was at the hospital for 12 hours during the end part of my long labour, I was exhausted and she sat with me most of the time monitoring bubs and massaging my feet, bringing me ice etc. I had an emergency c-sec and while DH was with brand new DS she sat and held my hand as I was shaking so much from epidural. So if you get a good one, then I would recommend it! Just means there is an extra person looking after you during birth smile

Yeah it sounds really great the girl was great at the appointment very professional im looking forward that i will have the same person at every appointment too as they usually have like 3 that rotate between appointment and someone else at the birth to support u even better.
I had a student midwife through my entire pregnancy and labour with DS I would highly recommend it smile
She actually ran from her uni to the hospital (which is quite a few km) to be at my labour when they called her.. she sat with me the entire time and coached me thru it and came to see me later when I was settled into my room. They really need the experience and are fantastic whilst you are in labour. smile
I have. I was a bit aprehensive at first too but I figured she had to learn somehow haha, and she was really keen and a lovely person. She was very supportive during my labour and it was good to have an extra MW there (even if not a fully qualified one). I didnt feel like she was intruding at all, the Queen of England could of walked in I wouldn't have cared less lol. I think you have made the right decision going from my personal experience.
All the best for your pregnancy.

I had my baby in Calvary last year and had a fantastic experience full stop. I don't recall having a student midwife. But I had a couple student nurses after ths birth and they were great. They are very attentive, and very understanding, and because they are still learning I found they were not pushy at all in their beliefs on what I should do with my child. I know i got a little off topic, sorry.
I didnt have one through my pregnancies but had one in both my labours and at a few appointments (just sitting in). I found they were lovely and really helpful and had an enthusiasm that the other mw's didnt. I had no problem with them being there as they have to learn somewhere. If you get someone you dont click with im sure you could change your mind
I have had a student with each of mine and have found the experience fantastic! I would highly recommend it!
