ALLERGIES & SCHOOLS Rss

My son will be 4 in August. He is allergic to peanuts (and other nuts), eggs, dairy, dust mites (aren't we all?!) and grass. We live in Auckland. I am hoping someone may have had a successful transition to a primary school with a child similar to mine. I am finding it difficult to source which schools are NUT FREE etc. I plan on moving house to be close to whichever school seems best. Any advice would be greatly appreciated (even which schools to AVOID!). Thanks, and Happy Mummy's Day too!
Hi there,

I am a primary school teacher in Auckland. In my class this year I have 3 children who are allregic to nuts, and in years before I have had children with various allregies ~ including one boy who was serverely allergic to just about everything!
Our school has a "no sharing food" policy, and we don't allow children to eat anything brought for a birthday at school ~ they have to take it home and ask their parents. I make sure the children in my class wash their hands before and after eating. My Year 2's are all aware that there are people with allergies in our class and it is our job to protect each other.
Each of the children has their epi-pen kit in the office and the teachers have been trained in first aid and know how to use epi-pens as well. All teachers in the school are made aware of which children have allregies.

If you child is allergic to dust mites, let him bring a cushion or a little mat for himself to sit on, I'm sure his teacher would be willing to accommodate him with that. Then take it home and wash it on the weekends.

Whichever school you send your son to should be willing to accommodate his allergies and make school a safe place for him. I assure you he will not be the only child in his class that's allregic to something. Allergies are so common among children. smile
