Sport Otago is giving budding junior sportspeople the opportunity to have a go at a multi-sport event when they hold the first Stride, Ride & Slide event at Hancock Park on Sunday 27 November. Children aged from 2-5 will have the chance to run, ride, and slide their way through a short multi-stage course as their first introduction to triathlon. The children will run 40m, ride or trike 200m, and then finish by zooming across a waterslide to the finish.
Sport Otago’s Active Movement Coordinator, Amanda Taylor explained why the event was developed. “There aren’t many events that accommodate children of this age and I wanted them to have a chance to be involved in something that is fun while helping them to develop fundamental movement skills which are important for when they start school.”
As well as the multi-sport event, there will be a wide presence from organisations involved in the early childhood sector, providing a range of entertainment for both the children and their parents. Families are encouraged to bring along a picnic and make a day of it.
Amanda Taylor added, “Funding support from Pub Charity has kept the entry cost at $2 per child so we’re hoping lots of parents will give their kids the chance to join in the fun.”
Entries can be done on the Sport Otago website at www.sportotago.co.nz Advance registration is required and places cannot be guaranteed for children who have not registered.
