Just wondering if anyone could recommend a good vaporiser for me and where you got it? Do you think they work??

My 13 month old is going through his first cold and is barely sleeping at night.

I have a nasal spray and aspirator plus I have put the baby vicks on his chest and back at night. Does anyone have any other tips to get him on the road to recovery??

Please help.

Firstly, how on earth did you keep him healthy from a cold for so long???

I bought a TAAV vaporiser from The Good Price Chemist for $45 and it's really good. I put the eucalyptus fluid in as well and it works great.

Also put the eucalyptus rub on the sole of his feet, for some reason it does make them feel better too.

Good luck, hope he gets better soon

We actually bought a humidifier for ours bubs nursery. Used it when she had the snuffles and we also put it on every night that we use the heater in her room to stop the air drying out.

We got a "snowman" childcare brand from babies r us for about $60 and it has been great.

Hiya
Go the Vicks vapouriser (on sale at the moment at all Discount Pharmacies) and use the Vicks Vapouriser Liquid. Also tilt the mattress up slightly, helps with the gunk that runs down the back of the throat while laying down. A small cushion or rolled up towel would be perfect.

The vapouriser is that good that when hubby and I got a cold, we used it in our room!!! Very safe too,

Bye

Hi there,

Went to the Dr yesterday for our bubs with a cold. He said DO NOT use a vicks vaporiser, the vicks even in vaporisor form is NOT good for babies. He said that you should just use saline drops for the nose and a humidifier to moisten the air...

(I was reccomended a vicks vaporiser too, and only just brought it, hadn't opened it yet, so I will be returning it today)

Mine is a hippo, but it is almost 5 years old now and im not sure if you can still get them, havent seen them around for a while. My brother has the vicks one for his son and they are just as good. Like one of the other PP's said, i too use the eucalyptus fluid in mine and i find it works fantastically. Just remember not to fully shut the door as your room could go mouldy (found that out the hard way)

I bought the Euky Bear Vapouriser from the chemist was around $45, its great and you dont have to add the vicks just use plain water, it works a treat x

Hi

We use a TAAV vaporiser.

There is no problem with using a vaporiser, it does the same as a humidifer in that it puts moisture in the air and creates steam which is what assists with unblocking noses and with coughing.

I think Aimees Dr was concerned about using Vicks inhalant in the vaporiser BUT its not clear from her post what the issue is.

I'm interested in what the actual reasons are that the Dr gave but in the meantime there is no evidence or information that you should not use Vicks. The baby balsalm is safe for children up to 5 years, the adult product should not be used on children under 5 years. Neither should be put on the face or in the nose, if you follow the directions its fine and its a product I'd say is in every Aussie household. If there was a problem then it wouldnt be available to purchase and I'd reckon there'd be a huge story on it in the media given what an every day product it is.

The doctor told me that Vicks has been banned and is no longer used in the States, and he said that it will only be a matter of months until this happens in Aus. Also as PP mentioned, he said that it can mask the symptoms and clog up the mucus. I use the Eucky bear on bub currently, but he has said to stop this also! It's is so hard, when we get told so many different things. Also different ideas from different doctors too. I think I will just try using steam (humidifier).

Sorry for being unclear, hope this is better. THere is another similar post which has a link to the article about vicks, but that doesn't back up what my dr said, so I guess its up to individuals to decide :)

Thanks for the info, interesting and I'll talk to my Dr about it. I know in France they dont use it on under 15s, maybe they were first off the mark. But here we have the baby balsalm so thought it was ok.

Thankyou to everyone that posted advice for me. I went and purchased a Vicks vaporiser from the chemist and the pharmicist also said not to use the Vicks inhalant and that my son was to young for it and that the steam was all that was really needed.
I gave my son a bath last night, rubbed the vicks balsalm on his chest & back, elevated the mattress in his cot, put the vaporiser on and left the door open slightly (thanks everyone for all those great suggestions!).
Guess what? He slept for 10.5 hours straight and didn't wake once!! I'm so happy and he seems to be so much better today.

:)

hi i am a mother of 3 expecting my 4th now i have one child with asthma and severe allergies, the thing about vicks is that it is not a cure for colds but it can help soothe chuildren so they can get sleep they are warning people of use of the rub on children as it is menthol based. the vaporiser fluid is safer as it is in the air not absorb heavily by the skin euky bear rub is good to help clear the sinuses.I have never had any issues at all i switched to vicks vaporiser after a taav as vicks offer a 5 year warranty on there machine taav only had one year when i purchased mine. some drs will say keep the heater on but in the case of asthma and allergies this does not always help as it dries the air and can cause more coughing so a vaporiser used with warm environment and good fluid levels will help the body fight off infection. the vicks also has a safety mechanism which will set off your surge protector if it is faulty. good luck with your purchase :)

Have had a Vicks vaporiser for our almost 3 year old for a couple of years. Vicks is the brand and yes it is the same brand of the chest rub. As advised to me by our chemist and doctor, you can use any of the vaporiser oils with the vaporiser you do not need to use the vicks brand because you have a vicks branded appliance. We have found it a very useful purchase, beneficial, effective, easy & safe to use. It was on sale when we bought it, cost around $40. Have also found rasing the head to stop the post nasal drip down the back of the throat whilst they are lying down a huge benefit, as someone else already mentioned.

we use the vicks vapouriser with the vaposteam. It has saved my sanity this flu season with my 13 month old. I used a Taav one before with my 3 yr old but the vicks one is better and it wont burn you either.

Do these vaporisers blow hold or cold air/steam? The one we've got from Toys r Us (think it's Childcare brand) blows cold - which seems to really defeat having a heater on to keep the room at the right temperature. We've reverted to just putting a bowl of water into the room so there's still moisture.

My 14 month is always getting colds, i really recommend a vaporiser ive got a hippo brand one, got it from my local chemist. I use Gold Cross Vaporiser fluid it relieves respiratory & Nasal congestion associated with colds n flus. My Vaporiser also turns itself off once the water has run out so very safe. Go vaporisers lol
