My baby is now 9 months old, and I have had problems getting her to eat. She won't eat pureed food, which I have been attempting to give her since she was 6 months. She still has no teeth. I gave her a whole piece of banana today, which she tried to shove in her mouth all at once and promptly choked on it. broke it down into smaller pieces and she put them in her mouth and ate them. I am now wondering if she just doesn't like the texture of pureed food but wants to eat finger food. However the problem is she hasn't got any teeth to eat many of the finger foods yet. Any ideas about what I can give her that she won't choke on and doesn't require teeth to chew or munch on? Any reply will be most helpful!!

DS didnt get teeth til 10 month and also hated puree. He ate pretty much anything even with no teeth as finger foods.
All Fruits apart from apple (diced into 1cm cubes) - banana, pear, watermelon, peach, sultanas etc
cheesy pops (in fridge section at supermarkets with the cheese sticks)
sandwiches - vegemite, cheese spread, avocado. Cut into cubes or in slices
Steamed vegies - broccoli, potato, pumpkin, cauli, carrot, peas/corn
pasta - penne cut in half, other smallish ones
scrambled egg
meats - just give in smallish pieced, chicken is a good one.
biscuits - arrowroot, cruskits

If you dont mind mess, let your little one try meals like maccoroni cheese, spaghetti, baked beans, tuna morney and eat with their fingers.

Hope that gives you some ideas.

Hi

They dont need teeth to eat, the gums are very effective. Both my girls didnt get any teeth till 12 months and by then were eating a variety of finger foods... So yes give her finger food or lumpy/chunky that you can spoon feed her.

Have a look here for options, from page 19 onward

choked or gagged? Gagging is a natural reflex to prevent choking. It is scary, but it is your babies way of helping themselves. We only do finger foods from the start (when they are ready) Have a look at baby led weaning or babyled solids for menu ideas.

DS preferred finger food also and had no teeth til 11mths, he would gum long pieces of chicken, steak etc and I would lightly steam carrot fingers so they weren't as crunchy, same with apples... as OC said gagging is a way of learning, DS would often gag the food would come back into his mouth and he would rechew... gross but its a learning curve

My DDs were the same but were pains because the DID have their front teeth early so they would bite of more than they could chew so to speak,.... I found a gummy baby much easier!!!

Thanks for the replies most helpful. bub has been eating toast for breakfast for the past few days and loving that. Not so keen on veges, pureed or otherwise!! she is picky ... she has also had banana consistently and today gave her pasta and cheese as finger foods for lunch. will now try out some other stuff!!

I went to a settling class at the family clinic in my area and found some very useful advice.
First off I would ahve started giving mashed food and finger food at 7 months, but this lady said to start that at 6 months, there is no need for pureed food as that is from 4 months, if u were to start that early.

She also said to give as much food as finger food, and let them feed themselves cause it teaches them alot more about food, makes it fun and teaches them then to know when they have had enough etc.

Mashed and lumpier soft foods are also really good for speech development. So no need for purees.

And it doesnt matter if they have no teeth as they mash it with their tongue and gums
