I`ve just found out that i`m having a beautiful baby girl! I also found out that she has a cleft palate. I heard about baby sign language a while ago and was planning on giving it a go with bub, but with my babys condition (she will most likely have trouble speaking and may need a speech therapist) do you think this will only slow down her development more?
Thank you for your email. I have a number of parents who are using baby sign language with the children who have communication difficulties such as cleft palate. Baby sign language can bridge the gap of communication for the words that your daughter may have difficulty saying and can help reduce frustration. We were contacted by a hospital who had started to introduce baby sign language to cleft palate patients and found it beneficial. It is important to start slowly and to introduce just a handful of signs initially. Be sure to include both practical and motivational signs for your baby.
Best of luck and let me know how you go.
