Laurie Lawrence
“I went and took my oldest with me. It was great and really informative. For me it was really worth going!” ~ Mum78
Coming from a long family history of swimming and coaching, Laurie Lawrence has become one of Australia’s most well-recognised and beloved Olympic swim coaches – a maker of champions. There would be few who do not know of Laurie or his spirited personality on the pool deck or his Kids Alive – Do The Five! TV campaign.
Laurie has represented Australia in World Championships, Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games as a swim coach. Australia’s swimmers are some of the best in the world, and during his reign as coach at the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane (1982) and Edinborough (1986), and the Olympics Games in Los Angeles (1984) and Seoul (1988), Laurie’s pupils were standout performers. They succeeded in breaking many National, Commonwealth and World Records in a number of their gold medal winning performances. He is still one of the most respected coaches in the business, attending the 2000 and 2004 Olympics as a key motivator for our swim team.
In 1988, Laurie was voted the All Sports “National Coach of the Year” and was selected as a finalist in the Australian of the Year awards in 1989.
Huggies Baby Club members who attended the Kids Alive program that recently toured Australia, were able to meet and chat with Laurie.
