Is it because of my exercise routine, or have I ruined my cycle?

Hi Alex,
Don`t know if you can help me, but I thought it was worth a try asking? I have recently come of the pill (January) after 10 years and am trying to conceive - however during the last 2 years I regularly skipped the sugar pill, therefore skipping my period. I have also been a pretty regular person at the gym eg. 8hrs a week. However since I have been off the pill, my period has been very very irregular 14 weeks and now 7 weeks. I went to a gynocologist and he checked my weight (normal) and did an internal and external scan. He said all was normal and had about 8 eggs just sitting in my ovaries - which relates to my history of not having my period. my blood tests came back normal (hormone level etc). He asked about exercise and i told him what/how much I did - he then said that this was my main problem. Body has gone into shock mode. He has now banned me from exercise for a month. If nothing changes, he will then put me on hormone tablets. he is also sending me for a blood test on day 21 of my cycle. However I am not convinced that it is because of my exercise routine - I am concerned that it is because I used to skip my period so regularly that I have ruined my cycle. I failed to mention this "skipping" to the doctor - should I tell him. Please help!!

Answer: Hi Kristin,
The skipping of the sugar pill and having a period when you are on the pill is really only a false period as the pill overrides your cycle so there is absolutely no damage to your reproductive system doing this. Try not to worry too much just yet. It sounds as if your doctor is investigating thoroughly but it may just be your body taking time in returning to a regular cycle.
Best wishes,
Alex
