Type 1 Diabetic, first pregnancy, NOT allowed to go past 38 weeks, what does that mean?

Hi there,
I am a type 1 diabetic and this is my first pregnancy. I am only 17 weeks pregnant and have been informed that I will NOT go past 38 weeks, I have a date and they are sticking to it. The dr's want me to have a natural birth if possible, but if they have said I wont go past the 38 week mark, what do you think that will entail?
The diabetes side is why they wont let me go past 38 weeks but is extremely well maintained as I'm on an insulin pump and with it being our first baby and high risk I am being monitored very closely and every 2 weeks from 24 weeks onwards.
I have tried looking up different answers for this question, but I have no one in my family to go off as I am the only pre existing diabetic, and all the american sites have mostly scheduled c-sections, not many Australian sites help.
I am not worried about how I give birth to my baby, if its Natural, c-section or induction as long as its a healthy baby.
Can you help me please?

Answer: Hi,
More than likely they are being cautious which is normal. The strains on your body and on managing diabetes after 38 weeks do increase so they may be tryin gto prevent this. If your diabetes is not well controlled the risks of probmes wiht the baby do increase. Talk to your health care professionals to discuss your care in the coming weeks so that you know what the plan will be and why.
Best wishes,
Alex
