Is artificial sweetner safe for pregnancy (the kind that's in diet soft drinks?)

I avoided it last pregnancy until very rarely in second trimester and then a bit more in third trimester. This time around I seem to be relying on it a bit more (I do have diet coke but don't drink coffee or tea) as I've been really tired, working and have a toddler.

I can't find much on the internet - I tried not to have any until 2nd trimester but had a few cans in week 11, and now at 16 weeks I'm nearly back to 300mls a day which I'm sure is not great. I just wondered what the medical preofessional advice on the sweetner itself was - caffeine aside! I really will ditch it if it's not recommended.... but also, will I have done harm to the baby?? Thanks so much! (paranoid but slightly addicted!)

Answer: Hi,
It is best that you reduce your consumption as your baby will experience withdrawals after the birth if you continue to consume such a large amount. Try some alternative drinks such as tea or even water.
Best wishes,
