2 1/2 year is having constant bouts of Diarrhoea but is not sick

My 2 1/2 year old son for last 2 months have been having bouts of Diarrhoea last from a couple of days to a week. There seems to be no specific cause, he is still well and eating. Have started testing foods but have still found no real cause. The only thing we have noticed is if he has some fruit every day then gets the runs if we give him no fruit for a couple of days it firms up. Could he have an allergy of some sort to fruit?

Answer: Some kids develop what’s known as “Toddler Diarrhoea”, which doesn’t have any organic cause and does seem to be diet related. Those who have lots of fruits/juices and an intake high in natural sugar seem to develop it. If he’s well and thriving and doesn’t seem unwell then I think it’s reasonable to do a trial of foods which seem to exacerbate it. Sometimes there’s a bacterial/viral or parasitic cause for diarrhoea and these are often associated with vomiting, weight loss and other symptoms. The poos then tend to off an off, slightly sweet smell about them so if this is the case, then take a fresh sample of the poo to your GP so it can be sent off to the laboratory for culture and examination.
Generally, there’s no such thing as an allergy to fruit but the fibre and natural fruit sugars known as fructose just seem to hurry through the child’s gut without being absorbed. Experiment with various fruits and vegetables, bananas may be fine but fruits such as oranges and mandarins create problems.
You may benefit from speaking with your GP or a dietician to see what other alternatives could work or what may be causing it.
