Answer: At three it is still entirely reasonable and age appropriate that he wets the bed at night. There can be a difference of a year or more between day and night time dryness, and some kids, particularly boys can take years to become dry at night. In fact, some are even in their middle primary school years. There’s a strong genetic link between the age children are dry at night and when their parents were so make some inquiries with your parents if you can.
Some kids have what we call a “soft signal” to their brain which wakes them when their bladder is full, some time longer to develop high enough levels of anti-diuretic hormone overnight which is what influences the lower production of wee overnight. Bed wetting takes place in a very deep phase of sleep, so there’s no point in a reward and praise system, the child is simply unaware of it.
Be patient, kind and very matter of fact about this. At three he’s still so young, even if he doesn’t want to wear a nappy for practicalities sake he’ll need to unless you want to be washing sheets everyday.
Cheers
