What’s the best way to encourage your little ones to eat right? And what if you had four little mouths to feed, like mum of 2 year old quads Fiona Worsley? The ladies on the couch discuss tips to help your child eat healthy foods and stay away from junk. Disguising healthy foods, avoiding food allergies and tips on feeding fussy eaters are all discussed. Jenny Coen also talks about the link between nutrition and behaviour in children.

Picky eaters

Picky eaters

Each household seems to have at least one fussy eater. What happens when you are a mum of quads? Fiona lets us know that mealtime can be chaotic and stressful and requires almost a military operation to get all the toddlers to eat together, especially when one of them is a particularly fussy eater. It takes a lot of hard work to ensure that a picky eater does eat a healthy and well balanced diet.

Rachel joins Janelle in the kitchen to prepare some delicious recipes with hidden vegetables to entice the fussiest of eaters. Janelle suggests that getting the kids involved in the meal preparation is an important part of encouraging them to eat well.

Managing behaviour positively

Managing behaviour positively

If there is one topic that almost all parents find hard to manage it’s – how to discipline your child? Professional Psychologist, Helen Reese, joins us for a chat on communication and behavioural issues. The girls chat about managing behaviour in a positive way, how to set structure and boundaries for your little ones and the importance of mum and dad being consistent and following through.

Speech - when is it normal for kids to start?

Speech - when is it normal for kids to start?

When a baby says their first word and starts talking is one of those milestones that parents love to compare and boast about. It’s really good for all of us to know when it’s normal for kids to start and how to help them develop their language. Speech Pathologist, Gillian Fong, guides us through issues like when to stop the baby talk, talking a bit above the level of your child and ways to encourage your child to speak.

Separation anxiety

Separation anxiety

Leaving our children in the care of others is never easy, but it does get easier over time. And it’s very normal for our children to struggle with the separation as well. Today the mums discuss separation anxiety and the techniques they have used to ease our children into daycare. Sarah Bryden-Brown, suggests that having a ‘goodbye routine’ helps the child to understand what is going to happen and there are no surprises. This helps your baby or toddler to feel secure in their situation.

Managing tantrums

Managing tantrums

Is it normal for toddlers to throw tantrums? Dr Cathrine Neilsen-Hewett says, absolutely yes. Between the ages of 18 months and 3 years is the most common time these develop and of course there will be varying degrees to how often and how challenging they will be. She says that there are different sort of tantrums so it’s important to understand where the tantrum is coming from. In general, type 1 tantrum is caused by either frustration, tiredness, feeling hungry or overstimulated. She recommends providing support and trying to teach ways of coping with the situation.

Toddler tantrums

Toddler tantrums

Why does your toddler always wait until you are out in public before throwing a big wobbly? Don’t worry it happens to us all, is the message from the mums on the couch. Public tantrums are incredibly hard to deal with as it can be difficult to use the same consistent approach to behaviour that you would in your own home. Dr Cathrine Neilsen-Hewett suggests that it may be that children become over stimulated when they are out and this can help to cause them to feel overwhelmed and thus more likely to have a tantrum.
