What food do you recommend for her, how many times a day and at what times?

Hiya Leanne, my wee girl is 4 1/2 months, her pedetrician told me to start feeding her solids at 5 months, she currently drinks 180-200 mil of formula 5-6 times a day, What food do you recommend her to take and how many times a day and what time of day would to give it to her.
Thank you, Lisa

Leann...
Answer: Hi Lisa, 5 months is a good time to start! I love avo as a starter for bubs, it has a similar composition of fats to breastmilk and is a lovely food (plus requires no prep other than thinning it down). You can use a very clean finger first off, sucking is a more natural reflex for a baby, or you can of course offer some on a nice rubber spoon. Most bubs will only take a teaspoon or two at first, but within a week or two can work up to a lot more. Offer any new food on its own (or with a food already trialed) over 3 days to test for a reaction. You will offer the first food on its own for three days, then the next food for 3 days, you can then, say, offer the third food with one or both of the trialed foods (assuming there was no problem) for the next three days and so on. Other great starter foods include:
  • Sweet potato
  • Zucchini
  • Pumpkin
  • Banana
  • Baby rice cereal (often best given with a food that has been trialed as it is quite bland)
  • Etc
I have some tip sheets on Huggies on starting solids and also a book, they might give you some more ideas on foods to offer at different ages, the links are: Solids Which foods when and fridge chart Also on the link below is a great chart on solids I did for Organic Bubs, its perfect for the fridge! www.cadencehealth.com.au/SneakysNutritionResources.htm Focus on texture, variety and quality. Solids is a great time, enjoy, Leanne
