He has been diagnosed with cows milk allergy and reflux

Hi Leanne. I have an 11 month old boy who has just been diagnosed with cows milk allergy and reflux. he is now on Neocate formula and is still having some breastfeeds. I am confused about what foods I can offer him now as there are so many terms for cows milk, and also can we use products with soy? He still eats very little (about2-3 teaspoons each feed) and his favourite foods were previously custards, semolina and porridge mixed with purreed fruit. We would appreciate any suggestions you may have.
Thanks,
Megan

Answer: Hi Megan, That`s great that you have at least the root of the issue, now like you say it is a matter of sourcing good supportive information. CMP can be a bit trickier than lactose intolerance for that reason, that milk can turn up in various products and under different names. Just before I go onto CMP, on soy, about half of all children who react to milk protein, react to soy. You may like to trial it and see how it goes, your bub may be one of the 50% who are fine (fingers crossed). Certainly, if you have soy as an option this can be really helpful, as it opens the door to soy cheese, milk, yoghurt and so on. This of course would mean that his favourites are back on the table. Don`t forget though you can use things such as rice, oat or almond milk (opt for those that are fortified with calcium) for his favourites too. To give you a list of resources I have listed below a load of allergy links for you, they are all good sites and some have helpful tip sheets and recipe books. Allergy links: Allergy Recipe Books: RPA Friendly Food Recipe and Food Intolerance Book from the Allergy Unit at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, Australia www.cs.nsw.gov.au/rpa/allergy/resources/foodintol/friendlyfood.cfm Anaphylaxis Australia - A recipe book containing 80 recipes free of dairy, egg, wheat and sugar. ... Finding allergy–free recipes for those special occasions can be difficult. www.allergyfacts.org.au/product.html Milk allergy The RPA web site has a fabulous booklet you can download on how to cope with bubs who have a milk allergy you can request a copy of Milk Allergy from allergy@email.cs.nsw.gov.au So I hope that this gets you started and opens the door to some info specific to CMP. All the best, Leanne
