I started my 23 week old baby on solids in the past 2 weeks...

Hi Leanne,
I started my 23 weeks old baby on solid in the past 2 weeks. What`s you opinion, if there is something I should give him more or less. He love his solid. I also try to give him some water through out the day but he only take a very small amount.

6.30 am - 10 mins on breast & ~ 120 mls of formula
11.00 am - a can of Heinz fruit puree
12.00 am - a can of Heinz solid (meat & vegie puree)
4.30 pm - 60 to 100 mls of formula
6.00 pm - 100 to 200 mls of formula
7.00 pm - 3 table spoon of Farex rice cereal mix with ~ 100 mls of formula
11.00 pm - 120 to 200 mls of formula (feed in his sleep)

Regards,
Vee

Answer: Hi Vee, Sounds like you and your bub are off to a great start. Routine wise it all looks good, baby is still have 4-5 milk feeds a day and they are generally before his solids so that`s good. The morning routine you may like to move about a little just so baby is having milk feeds more evenly over the day, just a thought. On routines, Karitane, recommend the following for bubs 6-9 months:
  • Early morning milk feed (baby may return to bed)
  • Up time 2 ½ to 3 hours. Solids. Play. Sleep (1.5 to 2 hrs).
  • Up time 2 ½ to 3 hours. B`feed. Solids. Play. Sleep (1.5 to 2 hrs).
  • Up time 2 ½ to 3 hours. B`feed. Solids. Play. Bath. Milk feed (or delay until just before bed). Quiet time. Sleep.
As to the exact time these schedules fall into depends on you and bub. So you can see you are pretty close to these. The only other thing I would mention at this stage is that commercially prepared baby foods tend to be much softer in texture and some bubs feed on these can find it difficult to move to coarser foods and then finger foods. Babies need practice using the muscles in their mouths, this is best done by slowly increasing the texture of foods. It helps with feeding and also jaw and speech development. If you are pushed for time the Bebedelice is fantastic, steams food to perfection in 11 minutes flat and you can steriles bottles and so on (see www.roseandlily.com.au ). Otherwise its to the stove to prepare lots of lovely vegies and fuit and freeze up into small parcels (check out baby cubes for this). I have some tip sheets on Huggies on starting solids and also a book, the links are: Solids Which foods when and fridge chart So I hope some of this is reassuring and helps you to continue going forward. All the best, Leanne
