Any suggestions on how to avoid having such trouble settling in the afternoon?

My 10week old daughter has been very hard to settle in the afternoon & evening since about 3 weeks old. She is currently waking at 7-7:30am (approx 7 hrs sleep), back to sleep in around 8-8:30 taking only minutes to settle, waking again at 12:30-1pm (approx 4.5 hrs sleep) and more difficult to settle around 30-60 minutes, then waking at 3-4pm (approx 2hrs) and only catnaping (approx 1 hr) the rest of the afternoon and getting increasingly more difficult to settle into the evening until around 11:30pm-1am when she will sleep for around 7 hours. Any suggestions on how to avoid having such trouble settling in the afternoon and evening, and how to get her to not catnap and sleep longer in the afternoon and early evening?
Thanks, Alex, mother of Olivia.

Answer: Hi Alex, Her body clock is in a different time zone and you need to adjust it so she is not sleeping so long during the day, the 4.5hrs in the morning is a real problem for getting her down at a reasonable hour of say 7.30pm. At this age you would expect her to be going down around 7pm with a night feed at either 10pm or 2am and then up at 7am with 2 or 3 11/2 hour naps during the day. At around 6 months you might expect her to drop the overnight feed and sleep right through the night. Try following our settling program and incorporate a feed/play/sleep routine. Cheers, Maree
