Is it normal or common to wake a baby for a feed?

Hello Maree - my husband and I are first time parents of a 12wk baby girl. I would just like to know whether it is normal/common to wake a baby for a feed? We`ve noticed that for a few weeks now we`ve had to wake her for her last feed of the day. In the last 2 to 3 weeks she`s dropped a feed down to 5 feeds in a 24 hour period. Her usual feeding routine (driven by her) is roughly something like this: 5am, 8am, 12pm, 4pm and 8pm. If I didn`t wake her at 8pm she`d sleep from about 5pm through to midnight which is not as nice as waking her for an 8pm feed then having her sleep through the night to roughly 5am! She`s a happy, healthly weight baby and I am soley breastfeeding. I just can`t help but feel really guilty each time I wake her as she is quite soundly asleep. Is it odd that she would want to sleep for roughly 7 hours from 5pm and is it ok for me to wake her for a 8pm feed or is there another solution. I really don`t want to be getting up for a midnight feed especially since I am quite used to getting decent sleep again!

Answer: Hi, I think you are doing the right thing and it seems to be working for you. Just be sure you resettle her awake into the cot and this way she will continue to sleep independently. She will start to stay awake for longer periods soon and ideally she will be awake until a 6pm feed and down around 7pm at that stage you wouldn`t want to wake her later. Cheers, Maree
