He has reflux, I have started him on solids but this hasn`t helped his sleeping at all

Hi Maree, I wasn`t quite sure who to address this question to. I have a 5mth old son who suffers from Reflux, he is currently on Zantac for that problem and he is gradually improving. But his sleeping is getting no better, for the first 3mths he practically slept on me because he would just scream the house down if put down. I was wondering when I should start the controlled crying also he is still waking up every 3 to 4 hours during the night for a feed (I am breastfeeding). I have started him on solids but this hasn`t helped his sleeping at all. Please help!

Maree...
Answer: Hi, Keep working on easing the reflux, it`s easy to create unwanted habits when baby needs soothing and understandably he has learnt to settle this way. Often the amount of food intake isn`t the problem it`s comes from him relying on your comfort and the comfort of the feed to resettle that has him waking constantly. At 5 months you might still expect to be offering one overnight feed but the important thing is that baby is settled awake into his cot after this night feed and any other feeds during the day. Actually if you had a feed/play/sleep routine happening this would also allow him to digest more during his wake time. Feed/play/sleep means you feed then play (nappy change during the night) and then watch for tired signs and settle awake into bed so he learns to sleep independently. If you want to try our controlled comforting techniques to settle him they are all hands on and no leaving baby, you could try the Newborn to 6 months techniques the details are on `Your Baby`s Sleep` or www.itstimetosleep.com Cheers, Maree
