She is not able to self settle so I think that is the problem

Hi Maree
My 11 mth old does not sleep through the night. She normally goes to sleep around 700pm each night - I give her milk and then put her down in the cot where she is sort of half awake she then awakes around 11.30am and I cannot get her to go back to sleep in her cot. I end up rocking her to sleep and then put her down she then wakes again after a few hours - rock her to sleep again the rewakes again after a few hours. I then end up giving her a small drink of milk to get her to sleep however end up putting her in her pram where she finally sleeps to about 7.00am. She is not able to self settle so I think that is the problem and not quite sure how to sort it out as I am not getting my night`s sleep and am back at work. Can you help. Thanks Dina

Answer: Hi Dina, This has now become her sleep association and she doesn`t know how to sleep without the rocking. Imagine you went to sleep in your bed and woke up in the bath at 3am!! you`d get a fright and need to return to your bed to return to sleep, same for bub. To change this baby must learn to sleep independently and they way we teach this is to have baby settled awake into their cot so when they wake on their light sleep they look around and are exactly where and how they went to sleep and resettle themselves. You will also need to stop the night feeding and use the techniques to resettle instead. You can get details from `Your Baby`s Sleep` or www.itstimetosleep.com. I hope this helps and all the best Maree
