Will control crying be the answer?

Hi Maree,
Our almost 7 month old will only sleep through the night about 2 nights out of a week. Its driving me crazy, he is fully breastfed and eats 3 meals a day. I do wake him for a top up a at 10:30pm each night, could that be a problem?
Will control crying be the answer? Is there an easier solution?
Any suggestion is welcome,
a sleep deprived Heidi

Answer: Hi Heidi, If there was an easier solution I would have wriiten about it. Controlled comforting is hard to do but gets results quickly and and by following our settling program you know you are doing it correctly. From about 6 months on a baby should be able to sleep 7pm to 7am without and overnight feed. It sounds like he is becoming dependent on a comfort feed to sleep. Give him the benefit of the doubt for another few weeks at least with one overnight feed. The rollover feed gives you confidence that he has had a feed at 10pm and you can go straight into using settling techniques. The most important thing is that you settle him awake into his cot at night initially and even if you are feeding him at night once, be sure to resettle him awake into the cot again so he learns to sleep independently. You can get an overview of our settling program from the Your Baby`s Sleep section of the Huggies site or for more detail, and a visual demonstration; It`s Time To Sleep DVD & BOOK. Cheers, Maree
