Waking earlier and earlier

Hi Maree,
I have a 12 month old son who has started waking earlier than usual several mornings a week. He was a terrible sleeper as a young baby, but gradually improved with age and controlled comforting techniques. He was still tending to wake around 5.30am, regardless of what we tried, but had been going back to sleep, after a short feed, for some months.

Over the past month, he has been waking at 4 or 4.30am and taking up to 90 minutes to get back to sleep (and generally only with a prolonged comfort feed and cuddle in bed with me!) Sometimes he will scream blue murder until he goes on the breast, other times it`s just like he is awake and can`t get himself back to sleep, and even wants to play. Not amusing at this time.

He was diagnosed with an ear infection a while back, but had grommets put in 2 weeks ago, so I wouldn`t think this is a problem anymore. We also have a 3 year old and she was never like this. Help please!

Answer: Hi Jenny, I`d say he is out of sorts after the operation and this is very common. At this hour you have to decide on a cuddle or a battle and I say the cuddle sounds good. Daylight saving has just arrived (if you`re not a Queenlander!) and this should help. Cheers, Maree
