I have an 18 month old girl that still breastfeeds through-out the night

Hi there, i have a 18 month old girl that still breastfeeds thru out the night (3-6 times in order to go back to sleep. i know she doesn`t `need` to, but i was wondering how i could get her out of this habit without too much crying as i have done cry it out a few times in the past..and each time i need to do it again she screams longer and LOUDER (like she’s getting murdered)
Thank you for your time
Ruby.

Answer: Firstly you need to understand why she wakes. Beacause she doesn`t know how to sleep without you. The comfort of the breast feed is her sleep assosciation. Second, changing a habit is never easy and to get your daughter sleeping independently means she needs to fall aslep on her own so when he wakes on her light sleep she can resettle herself. Imaging you have gone to sleep in your bed and you wake up in the bath you couldn`t go back to sleep without your bed and where you went to sleep. Same with babies that are rocked, cuddled, fed to sleep or transfered once asleep. It is a really heart breaking thing to teach a baby to sleep independently but if done correctly it can sometimes only take a week or so. My son was 12 months and he slept through from the first day of the program after having never slept through the night ever. This is why I help other parents today. Our program is not just about crying it out it offers strict techniques with a clear and repetitive message that it`s time to sleep. You can get an overview of our settling program from the Your Baby`s Sleep section of the Huggies site or for more detail, and a visual demonstration, It`s Time To Sleep DVD&BOOK. Cheers, Maree
