My daughter is almost 5 months old and starting to have big sleep problems

Hi Maree, my daughter is almost 5 months old and starting to have big sleep problems. I am finding it harder and harder to settle her. Wondering how long I should try to settle her. This been said she doesnt really cry and is mostly talking to herself but this goes on up to almost an hour and I find her upside down in the cot and wrap undone and then she starts to cry in frustration but then is really overtired and hard to calm down. I follow her tired signs and even put her down early as I know she is tired. I still wrap her as she doesnt seem to settle without the wrap, I wrap her with her hands down but I can see she likes her hands up, but because she is overtired the hands then fly around which stops her from sleeping. I also give her a dummy which I used to use sparingly but since she has been having problems I find it is the only way I can get some sleep for her. This been said her night time sleeps are now being effected which I think is because she is now more dependent on the dummy - please help!!!

Maree...
Answer: Hi, We don`t recommend wrapping after 3 months so I would stop the wrapping and try some settling techniques instead. If you watch for her tired signs and settle straight away this is best because an overtired baby is harder to settle. Let her go for 10mins talking and then `butt in` on her play time and begin the techniques, they offer a clear and repetitve message that it`s time to sleep. if you believe the dummy is a cause for waking then I would consider getting rid of this also at the same time. Controlled comforting techniques are difficult to do but sometimes it is better to bite the bullet and lose all the sleep associations at once. Cheers, Maree
