Am I fit to try for Number 2? Various issues in first pregnancy....

Hiya,

I have a 15month old son, my husband & I are looking at trying for another baby Jan next year (so if we fell straight away there would be a 26month age gap. I am extremely nervous about being pregnant again. I had gestational hypertensia, single umbilical cord & extreme all day sickness- this resulted in my son being born 4.5weeks early & sick. We had to stay in hospital for 2.5weeks with him as he had an infection. (he is perfect now & 96th percentile for height!) But this has made me nervous- as soon as I had given birth my blood pressure dropped back down. We were with an obstetric team & at my6week check up they suggested giving my body a bit to 'get over' the pregnancy. They suggested to get a proper at home blood pressure machine which i have done & all my readings are perfect score. I am slim but wouldn't say skinny/fat just average size 12/14- do i need to try & lose weight or anything? & should i be doing something to 'prepare myself' & are we ok to try if I feel ok? (have had no other health issues since except flu etc). Im so nervous Ill have the same issues :-/ Thanks so much in advance!!

Answer: I would suggest that you make an appointment with your GP and perhaps the team who cared for you (if you can) during your first pregnancy and speak with them about this. I can well understand your concerns but if you don't have your queries adequately answered you are likely to go into the second pregnancy very anxious about what could happen and if your first experience of pregnancy is going to be repeated. This will obviously affect your enjoyment and pleasure of being pregnant and looking forward to the next baby. No one can predict if you will have the same health issues but it would be ideal is you could speak with your GP or even an obstetrician to assess your individual pre conception health and if necessary, provide you with advice on what you can do to optimise your chances of pregnancy health.
