Sort It Out
Age: toddler, child, parent
Skill for Bub: Hand/eye coordination, Just for fun, Mind builder
Children learn how to categorize different items — a skill they’ll need in math class later on!
Show your child how to sort items by colour, size, and shape with three fun activities.
Color: Cut out several squares, triangles, circles, and rectangles using red and blue construction paper. Use chalk to draw two circles next to each other on the sidewalk. Or place two baskets next to each other. Ask your child to put all of the blue shapes in one circle (or basket), and all of the red shapes in the other.
Shapes: Cut out several triangles and circles in a variety of colours. Use chalk to draw one large triangle and one large circle on the sidewalk. Ask your child to put all of the circles in the middle of the chalk circle and all of the triangles in the middle of the chalk triangle.
Size: Cut out several extra small shapes and several extra-large shapes. Use chalk to draw two circles next to each other on the sidewalk. Or place two baskets next to each other. Ask your child to put all of the small items in one circle and all of the large items in the other.
