See the Seasons

Duration: short

Age: toddler, child, parent

Skill for Bub: Mind Builder

A special way to teach your child about the four different times of the year.

Depending upon your child’s stage of development and in which part of the country you live, she may be aware that certain times of the year mean different types of weather. For example, your child may understand that it gets colder once school starts in September, but that it doesn’t start snowing until closer to holiday time.

Encourage her ability to identify the four seasons by bringing her to the same location during different times throughout the year. Choose a place that will offer a natural contrast in appearance over the course of the year, such as a lakefront, a mountain, a grassy field, or a path in the woods. Offer a description during each visit by saying something such as, “Now there are no leaves on the trees and the lake is frozen. There is snow on the ground. Can you tell me which season it is?” Whether or not she gets the correct answer, don’t forget to praise her efforts. Remember, learning should always be fun.
