Jeans for Genes- win a Jeanswest prize pack!
I saw this beautiful quote on the Jeans for Genes Facebook page by a lady called Michelle. She said: "Genes, we all have them, but sometimes they are not perfect.” It made me tear up a little because it’s so true. With one in 20 children born with a congenital abnormality or genetic disease either you or someone you know will be directly affected.
I come from a family with members affected by epilepsy, and have just recently sat beside one of my dearest friends as she and her family come to terms with their child’s cancer diagnosis.
It’s projects like Genes for Jeans Day that make things like this a little more bearable. Whether it’s through just simple awareness of what the Children’s Medical Research Centre does, in investigating everything from birth defects through cancer, to actively fundraising, this is an important day indeed.
So how can you help on Jeans for Genes Day?
Wear denim on 5th August and share your pic: Remember to wear denim on 5th August, share it on Facebook and tag “Jeans for Genes Australia” in the photo so it can be shared with supporters of the campaign
Become a Fundraising Genie: Organise a fundraising activity at your home, office, school or community on Jeans for Genes Day. It could be as simple as asking your group to wear jeans on Jeans for Genes Day and make a donation. To get a free Genie Kit, visit the Jeans for Genes website to register.
Enter the Huggies Jeans for Genes Day photo competition. Huggies have just launched a baby photo competition to raise money and awareness for Jeans for Genes Day. Simply submit a photo of your bub in Jeans for Genes Day merchandise to go in the running for one of three $600 Westfield vouchers. For more information and terms and conditions see the Jeans for Genes Day promotion page.
And here’s a little something for YOU!
To go into the running for prize packs containing a $250 Jeanswest gift card, official Jeans for Genes t-shirts and gear, and two movie tickets, simply leave a comment below and tell us what favourite gene you hope you’ve passed on to your little one! My eldest is 7 and we've recently discovered that he is quite possibly on the Autism spectrum. I like to think that it is my genes that have passed on his lovely nature, sense of empathy and beautiful caring personality. I almost 100% certain his sense of humour and good looks are from his Dad. I'm so proud of my little man. xx

Posted 20 July 2011 - 12:29 AM
My daughter is headstrong, determined and imaginative - qualities I am thankful she has and hopefully can hold on to as she grows up. Our little man has gotten his dad's relaxed, go with the flow attitude, but also can stand up for himself when needed. We are beyond blessed with how our amazing children are developing and are thankful everyday for the individual personalities.

I hope that my family 'mole' pass on to my kids number 3 as its a special gift from my dad, most of my sister and brother have one, they are the same 'smooth' mole that is next to the eyes. beside, my first daughter have one, easy to spot her.
Posted 20 July 2011 - 12:37 AM
My compassion for others. This is a hard life and compassion can help someone who might of otherwise been on the edge and depressed see the world in a more hopeful light. If more people had honest compassion and caring there will be hope for a brighter future.
I teach my children to have empathy, kindness and compassion. I teach then that if someone is not very nice maybe they have had a bad day and we should not use that first impression to judge them. We should make excuses for eachother and be forgiving.

Patience and creativity - I think both go hand in hand. Both are wonderful gifts for being able to deal with obstacles. My father was an artist, I am very creative. Both my husband and I hope our daughter is bestowed with gifts such as these.

There is so much that i hope to pass on to my little beans.
Some of which I hope to have passed on to my 2:
- that different doesnt mean wrong. That different is just that ~ different.
- that you can be whatever you want, do whatever you want & go whereever you please, but YOU are accountable to make that happen
- for every action there is a reaction - good or bad, YOU need to be responsible for the outcome
I could go on & on, but dont want to bore anyone... LOL

I lost my most amazing mum to cancer just after I got married. I fell pregnant a few months later and when my bundle of joy arrived 9 months later, she had the same little nodule on her ear that my mum had. I was hoping my baby would have some gene from my beloved mum and this was it. I was overjoyed to find that my son, born 2 1/2 years later, had the same nodule on his ear! Every day I look at my kids, I see my mum and you've no idea how much joy this brings. I miss her more and more every day, particularly watching my own kids grow up. Despite the gene not coming directly from me, this quirky family trait still lives and warms my heart every day!
Posted 20 July 2011 - 12:51 AM
I hope i have passed on the motherly gene so that she too can experience the love and everything else that comes with being a mother i have for her and hope she passes it on to her own children.

My boys definitely look like me (they are 2 & 11 months) which of course I am happy about. However, other things I hope that they get from me are compassion and empathy. I think that this is often a rare trait in males, and I want my boys to feel for others and to care for others. This teamed with my husbands strength and logic I am hoping for two amazing boys.

I hope my son gets his fathers genes and grows into a loyal and admirable man who knows how to treat women with love and respect. I hope my daughter gets my genes and grows into a independent and educated women who realises happiness comes from inside. The main thing is that they are both happy and happy kids that grow into happy and healthy adults. I have personally experienced what happens to families when this isn't the case and all kids deserve a happy childhood. This is such a fantastic cause and we should ALL get involved!
Oh and one last thing - I hope both my kids get my hairline (don't tell my hubby) - LOL
Posted 20 July 2011 - 01:42 AM

My 2nd little girl was conceived 6 days before my Nanna passed away in the same place. Before she died it seemed she knew something big was to happen although I didn't know what she was talking about. My surprise pregnancy was a blessing and a little surprise from my Nanna. I love that my boys have inherited my father's giant hands (paws). My father's hands represented both strength and gentleness, were calloused from hard work but soft enough to soothe skinned knees and hold new born babies. My father died before my boys were born and every day I see my father's beautiful hands on my sons and hope that they will represent strength, gentleness and kindness to my sons children. (I'm also glad that they are boys and not girls because giant hands on girls are not so fantastic......I know!)

Both of my boys have beautiful long eyelashes from me. Actually they are even longer and mine and we always get comments from complete strangers about how long, thick and beautiful their lashes are. As for their looks they look more like their daddy than me but from me I hope they learn patience.

My answer doesn't apply to your question exactly, it's the opposite. I wish that I (and my daughter's father) hadn't passed on our Genes for Cystic Fibrosis (CF). We are both carriers of CF and this resulted in my daughter being diagnosed with CF which is a 1 in 4 chance when both parents are carriers of the gene. I hope I've passed on 1 million times the strength I've ever had so that she can fight her way through this terrible disease.

I hope my princess gets my sense of humour, no point in taking life too seriously, it passes by too quickly not to have fun and i hope she gets her dad's cooking skills. Oh and my colour hair, not her dad's red locks smile

Life is what you make it, do not sweat on the small things and remember to treat others as you would have to yourself!

The one gene that I have given to my baby boy has got to be his height! I am 183cm tall and have battled at time with being such a tall woman.. But it is absolutely beautiful to see my son inherit my length! He is bigger than all the other babies his age we know.. Love it.. smile

The best gene my 2 year old daughter has received is from her dad....she is so funny! The pair of them are like clowns. They crack me up everyday. I love sitting there watching them play because they are so alike! Very entertaining!!
