Would it be better for me to learn sign as well or just let my partner teach him?
Hey. My partner is deaf (but can speak as well) and already knows sign language, I want to teach my baby sign language but don`t know it! Would it be better to learn it as well or just let my partner teach him? Also because we want him to learn tradition sign language (NZSL in our case) would it confuse him if I made up my own signs? Thanks.
To help you get to know the basics you can either get your partner to teach you or go to your local deaf society and they will have a list of courses and when they are available. What your partner knows and what the deaf societies will teach you will be traditional NZ sign language.
Alternatively you could buy a New Zealand Sign language dictionary.
A course is great to cover the basics and ensure that you are making the correct handshapes and you have your hand in the right position. They are also great fun!
Best of luck!
