He understands the signs but is not doing them himself. How can I get him to start using them?
Hi Jackie, my name is emma and my son kanye has been diagnosed with global development delay, at present he is 3 1/2 and is only saying a few words, we are having speech therapy and have the early intervention team from the ministry of education, he is roughly 1 1/2 development age, my question is we have been using makaton as instructed by the speech therapist and kanye understands the signs but is not doing them how do i get him to start using them himself to show us what he wants?
Firstly how many signs have you introduced to Kanye?
It is important to start slowly and to be consistent.
It is also really important to include signs/words that motivate Kanye. For example, does he like books, music, his teddy bear etc?
Make sure you include a balance of motivational signs for him and practical signs to help you (such as eat, drink, sleep).
Once you have demonstrated the sign, you can also help him move his hand as required.
I would also speak to your speech therapist in relation to suggestions she may have on how other families have incorporated Makaton into their home when their child has global delay development.
Best of luck and keep in touch
