How can I communicate with her that it`s ok, reassure her without having to play into her tantrums?

Hi Jackie, my 13 Month old daughter seems to get very anixous while we are out visiting, at playcentre, music etc... she starts to cry, wants to be picked up, lays on her stomach and kicks her legs and will not interact with other kids. At home she is fine, gives lots of cuddles, lots of smiles etc. She also hates loud noises, even a crying baby will set her off... how can I communicate with her that it`s ok, reassure her without having to play into her tantrums?

Jacki...
Answer: Hi, You did not mention whether or not you are using baby sign already with your daughter. If you are not already using baby sign then trying to interact with her using sign at a time when she is upset or frustrated is not a good way to introduce signing to your daughter as her focus will not be on what you are doing and she may associate signing with whatever is distressing her at the time. I would advise that you seek further advice from your GP or a specialist in childcare to try and find out what is causing your daughter to become upset when she is outside of the home environment.
