I will need a stitch in my cervix with this pregnancy

I have been advised that i will need a stitch in my cervix with this pregnancy as our last pregnancy ended due to cevical incompetance at 20 weeks. what are the risks with having this done and what happens if i go into premature labour while the stitch is still in?

Answer: Hi, Thank you for your enquiry. This procedure has been done for many years and is a good treatment for cervical incompetence. The main risk is infection and you will be given antibiotics after the stitch is inserted. If you do show signs of premature labour you will be asked to go into hospital for treatment as is the case with all women. The stitch does not usually cause premature labour. Once the stitch is removed (after 36 weeks) you will be initially watched for sings of labour and then allowed to go home and everything is treated as normal. Good luck. Best wishes, Alex
