My first labour was very fast, and I`m really frightened about going through it again

Hi Alex,
My first labour was very fast. 1 hour after my first contraction I was fully dilated. I didn`t know because I thought I should be in early labour...being told labour takes 12hrs on avg...I only rang my midwife because I was in so much pain I couldn`t cope, and I felt like pushing.

I`m really scared about having a second baby, but I want my daughter to have a sibling. I`m scared about the amount of pain that occurred so suddenly I freaked out. Are you able to put my mind at rest? My first was delivered at a birthing centre, with no pain relief because there was no time. Would it be silly to have a hospital birth next time so if there is time I could get pain relief? What you say to a paitent of yours about their second birth after a first labour like this?
Thanks

Sarah...
Answer: Hi, You will be much more aware of labour next time around. Try not to worry too much there is usually lots of time to plan these things and everyone involved will be aware of your history. More than likely you will have a more ‘normal’ labour. Best wishes, Alex
