The baby`s femur was the length of a 17 week old baby; in the bottom 4 percentile

Hi Alex - I am 20 weeks pregnant and had our second scan last week. The scan indicated that the babies femur was the length of a 17 week old baby ie in the bottom 4 percentile of the normal range. All other measurements were avarage for a 19 week old baby. My midwife tells me its not an abnormality and not to worry but I cant stop thinking about it....what are your thoughts, should we be concerend? Both my husbnad and are not short, infact out first child has always been tall for his age!

Answer: Hi Bronwyn, Differences in measurements are quite common in scans. The measurements are based on averages – so if you have short legs in your family the baby may have shorter than average length at this age – it may change as the baby grows. It is only a very small difference and not enough to warrant any extra worry. It is still within what is considered normal range. Best wishes, Alex
