At 5 weeks I had a cyst burst from my right ovary into my uterus

Hi,
I am 7 weeks 1 day pregnant. At 5 weeks I had a cyst burst from my right ovary into my uterus. I have been spotting from that time. I had a dating scan at 6 weeks 3 days, with a 110 heartbeat, where I was told I had either a cyst or my corpus lutuem was approx 6 cm on my left side. Today my spotting has increased and my left side tender. I had a scan this morning which showed the baby with a good heartbeat and my blood test showed increased hormone levels.

This is my 5th pregnancy. I have had 2 M/C (2005), one daughter (2007) and then a third miscarriage this year. I spotted with them all early on and had all my miscarriages by 8-10 weeks.

What could be causing this prolonged and heavier spotting/bleeding?

Many thanks,
Emma

Answer: Hi Emma, Ovarian cysts can cause bleeding throughout the pregnancy. Try not to worry about the bleeding for now as long as it is not heavy and you are feeling strong cramps. Unfortunately there is a bit of a wait over the next few weeks until you are over the high risk time for a miscarriage. Hopefully everything will settle down and you can start to enjoy the pregnancy. Best wishes, Alex
