What do you know about vaginal haemorrhoids?

Hi Alex,
Hoping with your vast experience you can let me know what you know about vaginal haemorrhoids. I discovered what looks like a blister in my pubic area on the weekend and we went to the after hours GP obviously worried. She told me it was a haemorrhoid and there`s nothing I can do about it. On closer inspection later at home, I found that it seems to be one vein affected which travels from just inside my bikini line to the labia and the labia is all swollen on that one side too. I haven`t been to see my OB yet as he`s on annual leave at the moment and wondering if it`s something I really should get seen to right away? It`s not bothering me, not sore at all, but obviously looks ghastly and wondering also if we should steer away from any sexual activity. Would really appreciate your thoughts. Thanks! BTW, never experienced this with my first child and wondering if the constricted blood vessel has anything to do with the fact that I had a c section first time round.

Answer: Hi, Varicose veins are quite common in pregnancy, especially in the vaginal/pelvic region. There is not really much treatment available for them besides ice packs and rest if they are irritating or sore. They will reduce substantially after birth. This tends to be an inherited condition and is not related to a previous caesarean. You need to be a bit careful in that area but sex is not out totally. There are steroid creams available that can reduce the swelling but these are not used as an everyday treatment in pregnancy. Best wishes, Alex
