I`m 18 weeks pregnant and since 8 weeks i`ve had vaginal bleeding

hi alex,
i`m 18 weeks pregnant and since 8 weeks i`ve had vaginal bleeding. i`ve been into ed many times at the start, now i have gotten used to it as much as u can. i`ve had about 5 instances of heavy bleeding, which ussually lasts between 4-10 hrs. and i have constant light spotting. i have ultrasounds nearly every 2 weeks and the baby is very healthy and is gaining weight. no one seems to be able to explain why this bleeding started and if it will stop. latley i am getting very nervous about going into preterm labour. some days i will have a bleed and cramping with very mild pain, and sometimes loose bowel movements aswell. as these are all signs of preterm labour, but appear to be almost normal for me i`m not sure what else to look for. at 18 weeks would i feel very strong contraction? and would they administer labour inhibiting drugs this early if i was to go into labour? most of the time with bedrest the symptoms settle themselves. please any advice on this situation or past experiences would be greatly appreciated!!
no one seems to like to tell me anything.
thank you!

Sarah...
Answer: Hi, The bleeding may be from the edge of the placenta that can sometimes separate from the uterus. The blood that you are losing is your blood so you need to check that your iron levels are normal. The bleeding may settle as the baby grows but you may continue to bleed on and off. If you do start to miscarry you will experience strong contractions and heavy bleeding. They tend to not treat preterm labour until after 20 – 24 weeks but they will look at each case individually. Best wishes, Alex
