I made the assumption that the quinine levels in these drinks were safe during pregnancy...

Hi Alex
I am 28 weeks pregnant and have been having leg cramps at night (nothing unusual there I know). Someone recommended drinking `bitter lemon` to help with this, which I have been doing on and off for the last few weeks. Probably about 3-4 300ml bottles a week. I made the assumption that the quinine levels in these drinks were safe during pregnancy, but decided to do a little research today to find out for sure -and there are conflicting reports everywhere! I was wondering if you could clarify this for me? I am not due to see my doctor for another 4 weeks and I just may worry myself crazy by then!
Thanking you
Lisa.

Answer: Hi Lisa, Bitter lemon contains a small amount of quinine. It is not advisable to consume quinine in large amounts during pregnancy. The amount in the soft drink is very low so more than likely it would have caused no harm. Drinking plenty of water and eating bananas which are rich in potassium should help cramps. Best wishes, Alex
