Labour time for second baby

Hi, I am wondering when should I go to the hospital as I am having my second baby. I heard it is faster (labour) and I`m scared I won`t make it on time. For my first labour it was 14 hrs, which 4 hours was spent at the hospital before bub was born and I needed an episiotomy. I`m scared I`ll tear again this time as it`s only been 15months since.

Answer: Hi, Thank you for your enquiry. Your labour may be a bit faster than the first but you will know when the contractions get more painful and are very regular (around every 5 minutes) this is probably a good time to go to hospital. It is best to always ring the maternity unit and talk to them for advice when you are in early labour so then you feel reassured. There is much evidence nowadays that an episiotomy is better avoided if possible and a tear heals much faster and with much less pain. Try to talk to your carers about this so that it can be written in your birth plan. Best wishes, Alex
