Run of contractions that disappear

This is not my first baby, so I know the difference between real contractions and braxton hicks. For the last 3 days I have been having painful contractions off and on and then yesterday everything started with strong contractions 7 minutes apart and progressively becoming stronger over a 2 1/2 hour period. Then it all abruptly stopped. What does that mean?

Answer: Hi, Thank you for your enquiry. With subsequent children your uterus can have `runs` of contractions that disappear as quickly as they started - this is regarded as normal and to be expected. It is also advisable to notify your hospital that this has been happening as it can sometimes be related to an infection. If the contractions get regular and 5 minutes apart then you need to visit your hospital for a check up. Best wishes, Alex.
