Can I request an epidural before hand?

Hi Alex, I am pregnant with my second baby and would really like an epidural this time. Can i request one with my Dr before hand and is there any reason that this request would be denied. My last labour was drug free and i am quite stressed about having a drug free birth again.

Answer: Hi, Thank you for your enquiry. It may be best to discuss your fears and concerns with your carer so that you can decide if an epidural may be the best decision for you. Normally subsequent births are more straight forward and progress more quickly than first births so the anxiety that you are feeling may not be as bad as you had thought. Epidurals tend to be recommended if the likelihood of complications arise and a prolonged labour is expected. Best wishes, Alex.
