I had no signs or symptoms that I was pregnant

I am 28 weeks pregnant. I only found out for definite that I was pregnant 3 weeks ago as I had no signs or symptoms that I was pregnant. I was quite surprised that I was 6 months pregnant but the question I would like answered is how at risk is my unborn child of having abnormalities or defects once born. I have smoked and drank through my pregnancy will this have any effect on the baby.

Answer: Hi, Thank you for your enquiry. If you have smoked and drank during pregnancy then your baby is at risk of having complications associated with this. Heavy drinking can cause problems with the baby`s development but social drinking has not been proven to cause long term effects. Smoking tends to affect the size of the baby (including the size of the brain) so it is best that you try to give up now so that your baby can develop and grow as expected. Please talk to your carers for more advice and perhaps they can recommend further tests. Best wishes, Alex.
