All she wants is for me to pick her up all the time
I`m 29 weeks pregnant with my second and my first Mia is 17 months. All she wants is for me to pick her up all the time. This is starting to become quite hard. She is a very determand little girl and try`s to push the limits. I`m getting to the point I dont know how to handle it.
It is comforting and safe to be picked up by someone who loves us, however it is not always practical. The way to manage this behaviour is to first try to work out why she is doing it. Is it mainly when she is tired? Feeling scared? Wanting your attention? You say that she is trying to “push the limits”, so if you believe she just wants you to focus on her, then you can find a way to meet that need in a way that suits YOU. That may mean you sitting in a chair and inviting her to come and sit next to you while you give her a cuddle or read her a story. Or simply crouching down to her level and talking to her calmly.
Being consistent is one of the hardest things to do as a parent. It is important to let her know EVERY time that she yells or screams she will NOT be picked up. Every time we "give in", we are teaching our child that if they tantrum for long enough, they will eventually get what they want. As a mother of 4 myself, I found being consistent difficult – I’m human too – but it is extremely important if we want to change a behaviour!
All the Best!
