neonatal unit babies Lock Rss

hey guys,
thought i would start this post to see how many other parents out there have had their baby in the neonatal unit once they were born.
My little boy kayden, was born by emergency c-section and was fine until 12hours later when he choked on something that hadnt been cleaned from his lungs. While i was in labor Kayden did his first poo and he swallowed some, he was under a lot of stress so decided to go breech at the last minute. Everything is fine now - but i still can not forget the day after when he was in neonatal unit in an incubator and i wasnt aloud to touch him or hold him because they didnt know what was wrong with him.
WHO else has been in the neonatal unit, and why were they in there? -Kayden 31.1.05 & Tianah 25.8.06

Hi Leia,
I have twin boys who were born at 32 weeks.
they were in NICU for 4 weeks and spaecial care for 2 weeks.
I didnt get my first cuddle until they were 2 weeks old. They were in their special little homes for 3 weeks. One of them being vetilated and also on CPAP.
Very scary time I must admit.
Until you have been in that situation you dont realise what goes on in there.

My daughter Brooke spent 5 months in NICU, she was born at 23.2 weeks and weighed 450 grams. She's now 2 years old and very healthy and happy.

Mum to Brooke 23.2 weeks, 450 grams now 3.5 yrs

my first baby i was in labour for 22hrs before an emerg c sect, she was born 9lb10oz @7pm and very sick & not breathing, docs not sure what was wrong, & we were in a regional hospital. Had to have a retrieval team come to the town from the WCH in Adelaide, and induce her into a coma to transport her via air ambulance to Adelaide, I couldn't go as I'd just had a c/s, so my mum went with her, we had a phone call at 3am from the specialist in NICU telling us he didn't know what was wrong and didn't think she'd make it thru the night. he arranged for the RFDS to come back to collect my husband & myself and we would have to make a decision of turning life support off, and we saw her at 8am the next morning on life support, slowly improving... turns out she had Group B Strep & it was treated by penicillin (lots of it), and she came good about 4 days later. we finally got the all clear it was 14 days in hospital, and lots of tears (mostly of joy when she was better!) She's now 2 & 1/4 and not showing any effects of her first couple of weeks! We have a boy who was born in Jan, healthy & happy! Much nicer experience for his birth!
my son born 25th June 03 was born with heart problems, condition called "Tetralogy of Fallot" we knew since 18th week ultra sound but delivered by c-sect at 38 weeks and taken straight to intensive care unit to be monitored, bu thankfully he was a trooper and was only there for 1 1/2 days then was able to be in my room. Had open heart surgery at 6 months (very scary) but is now a typical 2 year old.

Hi there. My little man was born 4th April 2005 at a wopping 10 pound 14. He was delivered by emergency c section(15 hours later) as i was getting fevers and his heart rate was all over the shot. everything went well untill the morning when his breathing became shallow and extremely fast. They rushed him away to find he had pnemonia. I couldnt hold him or touch him for 5 days. It was the worst 5 days of my life. People often walked past him in his incubator and wondered why on earth he was in there as he was sooooo big and all the other little babies were only tiny.

my son went into NICU 24hrs after he was born. his resporitry rate was 125per min when it should of been between 30 -60. They werent sure of what it was they did a few chest xrays and found that his lungs were slighty abnormal. He was also delivered by emergancy c section. He also had really bad jurnduce and was in a crib also for 3 days he was in total in NICU for 2 weeks. Very scary and hard to leave him up there. I stayed in the hospital for the whole 2 weeks.

Hi there

My baby son had a heart condition which we were not aware of at the time of his birth. he had started going blue/ purple and was very weak in his 2 days of life. He was rushed into the special care unit and from there the nets team did what they had to do to revive him as his oxygen level was only 18%. After hours of waiting, he was then rushed to the RCH for an operation. It was a very traumatic experience as I did not expect it at all. We were actually going to go home the next day! Lucky we didn't or I don't know what we would have done if we were at home. But all is well now and he is a happy bubbs at 7mths. We still have to see the cardiologist in oct for a checkup.

I guess the only thing we wish for is for our babies to be healthy and safe.
Hi my second son was in the neonatal unit at westmead hospital for a week back in 2001. I went in to labour with no troubles then i had some pethidine because the pain was that excrushiating then 20mins later i had him a whole 45mins i was in labour. The next thing i know about 6 doctors rang into the room they took my son to a bed started putting tubes and all sorts of things into him. I was that out of it from the pethidine i didnt know what was going on.They took him to westmead childrens hospital in a helicopter and when i got there i just cryed for a good 2 hrs he had machines attached to him tubes up his nose in his mouth it was awful. He had to have a brain scan that was all clear. They said he was having ceacers nobody could tell me why he had about 7 checkups in the course of 3 yrs and about 9 hearing tests. He is now a healthy 5yr old who just started school i think it was just one of these things that happen in life.
Hi! I had twins born at 34 weeks by emergency casaer! I went into labour and they were both the wrong way so it was all pretty scary! I also had gestational diabetes which had made them bigger than usual for twins at that gestation. They spent two weeks in nicu in incubators with breathing tubes, feeding tubes and cpap! It was all a very new experience as my first two babies were full term and healthy!
The team at our hospital were great and really looked after us well! smile

Hi, My little boy Nicholas was born 6 weeks early on 9 Nov 05 and was in the NICU for 2 days and was then in SCBU for 2 weeks. It was a very scary time, especially when he was in an incubator and we were only allowed to take him out for a quick cuddle each day. He was fed through a tube down his nose while he was learning to suck. He only weighed 2.01kg and now nearly 5 months later he is just over 5kg. We have a beautiful, healthy little boy.

Mum of Nicholas, 14mth

My daughter was born 41 weeks gest, and weighed 5lb. Due to having probs regulating her temp she was taken to the nursery. All i wanted to do was hold her and be with her all the time. Luckily she was only in there for 4 days, unlike all the other babies with much more serious problems. The nurses wanted to do some tests to find out why she was such a small baby, and of course they found no reason. Now shes a very happy 7 month old, still small but healthy.
