Introducing Baby's first solids feeds Rss

Hi to all Mums and Dads

I have been feeding my 5 1/2 month old on the baby rice cereal for a couple of weeks now and feel that it is soon time to try an introduce some new foods.

What are your opinions on advocado?
and
What were the first foods introduced to your baby?

I am happy to use the heinez baby foods, but would rather try something that is "natural".

All the best

Hi Zacs mum

Introducing solids is a fun and exciting time for you and baby. The EHC recommends you introduce new foods gradually to check for allergies. Once you are sure baby is okay you can start mixing them together. I first started solids at around the same age as you are. My daughter was initally a bit fussy but I persisted every day and now she eats almost anything. I started her on home-made pumpkin, sweet potato, carrots and potato and also pureed banana. i would steam vegetables then puree with a hand blender.

I do use the canned variety of foods occasionally and found they are more "watery" in consistency. I recommend you check the lable for ingredients and the percentage of vegetables as some are lower than others. From memory, I think Heinz are pretty good. If you are wanting "natural" products you can try the organics range of baby foods but these can be quite costly.

I have tried giving baby avocado but she just spat it out...but I'll give it another shot in a few weeks.

Good luck and have fun!!

Hi Zacs Mum,

You could try to make your own baby food. It's very easy and that way you also know what is in it. Try out with just apples or pears first. You can also get a organic rice cereal from safeway made by bellamy's www.bellamysoranicfarms.com.au. It is also endorsed by ABA.

Bennett is 4 and 1/2 mths and I'm htinking about starting him on solids in the next few day - I know the guidelines reccommend 6mths

Most child "professionals" now recommend starting baby on solid foods at the age of 6 months. The primary reasons given are to avoid developing allergies and also because the baby's digestive system is not really mature enough to handle food before then. Having said that however, alot of mums I know started their babies on solids at the age of 4 months without any ill effects. I believe every baby is different and ready to try things at different times. Nobody knows a baby better than it's mother - and only you can decide if they are ready for solid foods or not.

I waited until 5.5 mths to start my little girl on solids and, like most mums, started out with baby cereal to get her used to eating from a spoon. Once she started taking the food well (only a few days) I started introducing mashed vegies and fruits. The clinics also recommend introducing new foods one at a time to check for allergies.

Anyway, I hope this has been of some help to you!

Remember, introducing solids should be a fun experience for mum and baby. if your baby is not ready - you will know it!
