Hi, I hope that I am not too late asking as this post has been up a while now, but, I am wanting to hear from those of you who know of others (or who have themselves) who have continued to breastfeed right through pregnancy and ended up feeding both a newborn and a toddler.
I am 6 weeks pregnant (tomorrow) and am still breastfeeding my 16 month old little girl. She only gets one feed in the morning, and one feed at night. I would ultimately like to continue to feed her until she is 2, but that will put her right at the time when the new bub is due. So, perhaps I will try and wean her a few months before. I am not sure yet.
My concern is, I do know of a person who continued to feed both a toddler and a newborn, and both the mother and the newborn have now got 'certain but fairly major sicknesses' ie, bad allergies, celiac's disease, heart problems, the list goes on.I do not know if these illnesses are related to the breastfeeding or not.
My worry is that perhaps it is all too much of a strain on the mother, so therefore the mother and even worse, the newborn suffers permanent damage because of this. I do not know. I would like to hear of positive stories on how the children "turned out" with their health, even when the babies are young toddlers still. But, if there is negative stories then I would like to hear those also.
I have just one other thing on my mind also (sorry to be rambling) but the first few days before your milk comes through after the birth, your baby feeds from colostrum, which is the vitamin k for the baby. Does anybody know what happens here? Do you still produce the colostrum? Would your newborn still get the sufficient amount of Vit K? Does this mean that because you are already feeding that you don't get 'full and sore' breasts from the milk coming in? We are not ones to give our babies injections (different topic) and vit k is one of them.
These are just a few things on my mind at the moment seeing as I am pregnant with bub no 2. I have been trying to drop one more feed from my little girl, but, it seems the more I try to drop one, the more feeds she wants to have! She really demands it!
