Incontinence?? Lock Rss

Hi Alex,
I have recently become a first time mum (6 weeks ago). I gave birth to a beautiful little boy. The labour was very long (36hrs) and ended up having an epidural as bub was becoming distressed. I ended up having a few stitches but other than that seem to be fine. However, 6 weeks on, I am still having incontinence problems. This mainly occurs when I do some types of exercise. I am not doing any impact exercise, only cross trainer and cycling at the gym. Both these exercises are usually fine (especially if I exercise in the morning). I find I cannot even walk without leakage occuring. Up until 3 weeks post, I thought the pelvic floor was improving. I was able to work up to a brisk walk with no ill effects. However, now I find I sometimes cannot even go for a slow walk without leaking. I have also noticed that my pelvic floor is weaker later in the day. I started doing my pelvic floor exercises early on and try to do them as often as I can. Is there something else I should be doing or not doing?? I would like to go for long brisk walks, but find it too embarrassing if I do.

Thank you for your enquiry. It does sound as if you are having some ongoing problems that need further investigation. You need to try to do the pelvic floor exercises as often as you can as these do really help. There may be an incontinence clinic at your local hospital that you can be referred to by your GP. Incontinence problems can continue for some time but specialist help is available.
