shingles Lock Rss

hi,
Im abit worried im 15 weeks pregnant with my second child and my mother in law has just found out she has shingles could that affect the baby.

Thanks,

Hi,
Thank you for your enquiry. The shingles virus is the same as the chicken pox virus. If you have had chicken pox then you should be immune to the virus. You can have a simple blood test to check this and if you are not, there is an immunization that you can be given during early pregnancy. If you have not had chicken pox before then you are at risk of getting chicken pox and this can have some complications with the baby. If your immune system is reduced you are at a higher risk of developing complications from the virus (if infected). If you do get chicken pox there is also a treatment available to try to prevent any complications.
Best wishes,
Alex.
